Flute Club of Calgary presents

Jazz Flute Big Band

Winter Semester: March 1 to May 3

The international phenomenon, the Jazz Flute Big Band (JFBB) is here. Led by a three-time winner of (and production coordinator of and a soloist with) the Jazz Flute Big Band Competition of the National Flute Association, John Reid is working internationally to bring this project to Calgary.

Traditionally horn players (trumpet, sax, trumpet) have had the chance to ease into jazz playing by playing in a jazz ensemble, getting the hang of swinging, hearing colleagues improvising. Flute players have not had that opportunity — until now! American jazz flutists Ali Ryerson and Billy Kerr, and British jazz flutist (and founder of the Flute Journal website) have been commissioning “charts” from great jazz writers for JFBB and are making those charts available to John Reid.

Reid holds weekly rehearsals Thursday nights: ensemble charts, lead sheets, beginning jazz improv, Spring concert (May 3), with a nominal registration fee ($225) to cover the cost of rental, charts, artistic direction, etc. If you are interested, contact John Reid at (403) 288-5794 or jcreid@ucalgary.caRecruiting flutists of all ages now for Winter session, Thursdays: March 1 to May 3. Must be a good reader. Previous jazz experience not required.
